What are basic needs?

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, basic needs for a person’s physical and mental wellbeing start with access to fresh air and water, nutritious food and a stable home.

Examples of these needs can include:

  • Food security: Access to nutritious and sufficient food.
  • Housing stability: Secure and stable housing.
  • Financial wellness: Ability to manage finances and meet financial obligations.
  • Healthcare: Access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
  • Childcare: Affordable and reliable childcare options.
  • Clothing: Adequate clothing for various weather conditions, social and work settings.
Do I need basic needs support?
  • In the last 12 months, did you eat less than you felt you should because there wasn’t enough money for food?
  • In the last 12 months, has the electric, gas or water company threatened to shut off services in your home?
  • Are you worried that in the next two months you may not have stable housing?
  • Do problems getting childcare make it difficult for you to work or study?
  • In the last 12 months, have you needed to see a doctor, but could not because of the cost?
  • In the last 12 months, have you had to go without healthcare because you didn’t have a way to get there?
  • If you answer yes to any of these questions, please contact the Basic Needs Resource Center at basicneeds@utdallas.edu or stop by SSB 4.300 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
